Sports in Sri Lanka

Since the 1990's the Sri Lanka national cricket team has emerged as one of the world's best teams after winning the 1996 Cricket World Cup, even though they were viewed by many as the underdog. They have become more and more visible after taking the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, beating the crowd favorite and hosting team of India. They have also taken the Asia Cup in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008 and 2014. They were also the runner-ups in the 2007 and 2011 Cricket World Cup as well as in the 2009 and 2012 ICC World Twenty20 as well as hosting the 2012 ICC World Twenty20. Sri Lanka's sports stars include Muttiah Muralitharan who is considered as the "greatest Test match bowler" by the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. Other most notable Sri Lankan athletes include Duncan White (hurdler), Susanthika Jayasinghe (sprinter), and Mohammed Lafir (billiards)

The Sri Lanka national cricket team achieved considerable success beginning in the 1990s, rising from underdog status to winning the 1996 Cricket World Cup. They also became the runners up of the Cricket World Cup in 2007, 2011 and of the ICC World Twenty20 in 2009 and 2012. Former Sri Lankan off-spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan has been rated as the greatest Test match bowler ever by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. Sri Lanka has won the Asia Cup in 1986, 1997, 2004 and 2008. Current world records for highest team score in all three formats of the game are also held by Sri Lanka. The country co-hosted the Cricket World Cup in 1996, 2011 and have hosted the 2012 ICC World Twenty20. They lost to the West Indies by 36 runs. Sri Lankans have won two medals at the Olympic Games one silver by Duncan White at 1948 London Olympics for men’s 400 meters hurdles and silver by Susanthika Jayasinghe at 2000 Sydney Olympics for women’s 200 meters. In 1973, Mohammed Lafir won the World Billiards Championship, highest feat of a Sri Lankan in a Cue sport. Aquatic sports such as boating, surfing, swimming, kite surfing and scuba diving on the coast, the beaches and backwaters attract a large number of Sri Lankans and foreign tourists.

Sport in Sri Lanka is a significant part of Sri Lankan culture. Although the Sports Ministry named volleyball the national sport, the most popular sport is Cricket. Rugby union is also popular. Other popular sports are water sports, badminton, athletics, football, basketball and tennis. Sri Lanka's schools and colleges regularly organize sports and athletics teams, competing on provincial and national levels. The legendary Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan also ended his incredible career at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai which hosted the 2011 World Cup finals. The national cricket team of Sri Lanka has won the Asia Cup in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008 and 2014. Sri Lanka has many sports stadiums, including Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium & R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla and Galle International Stadium in Galle. The country co-hosted the 1996 Cricket World Cup with India and Pakistan, the 2011 Cricket World Cup with India and Bangladesh and has hosted the Asia Cup tournament on numerous occasions. Water sports such as boating, surfing, swimming and scuba diving on the coast, the beaches and backwaters attract many Sri Lankans and foreign tourists. The Sri Lankan Government does the needed renovations to keep hold on the quality of the stadiums, with the separated funds shared for Sri Lankan Cricket. The cricket board draws and recruit new players annually, and divided into two team A and B. Once the players reach a higher position in their career, they have the opportunity to get picked under the Nation team.
